Chiropractic and Baseball

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

There are few things on this Earth greater than Chiropractic and Baseball.

Now that the Major League Baseball season has kicked off it is only fitting to discuss two things which sit as numbers 4 and 5 in my top 5:  Chiropractic and Baseball. The other three happen to be God, family, and friends in that order.

As a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan I know the struggle of defeat in the pursuit of past successes. One of the keys to achieving the success on the field has a lot to do with physical performance though.  That is why the MLB finds it beneficial to have Chiropractors on staff as team physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions in order to keep their players on the field.   Click to see a list of all the MLB Chiropractors in the Big Show.

As long as the athletes are healthy, mobile, and able to perform at their peak throughout the season the team will usually succeed.  A lot of this stems from success of the pitching staff.  Since very few of us will grow to become Major League pitchers it is important to protect the health of young developing players so they don’t suffer injuries which could linger throughout their lives.

Injuries suffered by youth league pitchers tend to occur due to overstress of the ligaments in the elbow and shoulder from pitching too much when their bodies cannot handle the load.  Luckily, there are a few protocols for youth leaguers to make sure they are less likely to suffer injury while pitching or throwing for that matter.  Dr. Alex Vidan, DC is the former team chiropractor for the 2011 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals, and he breaks down some great information to protect and rehabilitate our little leaguers looking to develop into successful and healthy ball players. The most common injuries among baseball players include: shoulder tendinitis, torn rotator cuff, labral tear of the shoulder, torn medial collateral ligament of the elbow, stress fracture, muscle spasm, runner’s knee, and stress fracture.  All of which can keep a baseball player on the DL for an extended period of time, if not permanently.  In some way, shape, or form chiropractic care can be beneficial for all of these injuries. Although, we cannot treat complete tears to ligaments and labrum or stress fractures, we can help to rehabilitate through adjustments to increase the neurologic and healing affects to improve function following injury. This is only something Chiropractic Physicians can perform in the realm of the adjustment.  We can also perform soft tissue therapy and exercises to correct the compensatory changes with biomechanics to correct the cause and prevent future injuries.

Ultimately, Chiropractic care is the optimal choice for care when it comes to the developing athlete.  This is evident from the success of many professional athletes, baseball players included, who owe much of their health and wellness to a Chiropractor!
